Join us as we look back on our first ever podcast series, The Smart Hustle, investigating the weird and wonderful ways students make money.

We’ve recently wrapped up our first ever podcast series, looking into the weird and wonderful ways University Students make money. It has been a pleasure to speak to a range of student entrepreneurs, all equally creative but used to earning some much needed cash in completely different ways.

This blog will look back at some of the highlights of our first series, even though we would love to include them all. We’ve included Spotify links in this blog, but you can also find these episodes on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast fix.

#1: Mei Ying Chow – The Smart Hustle of Youtub‪e‬

To kick off the series, we spoke to Mei Ying Chow, a YouTuber and vlogger who started out on publishing content on Instagram when she was just 14 years old. Mei has since risen to the status of a cross platform influencer, all whilst she continues to study Economics at KCL. We discussed the challenges of running a business whilst studying and learned how for years she was embarrassed to share details of her hustle with her family and friends…

#3: Danielle Mass – The Smart Hustle of Depop

In our third episode we sat down with Danielle Mass, a psychology graduate from the University of Bristol who has made a name for herself on Depop. Now verified with over 50k followers, Danielle runs her Depop page, imaginatively named ReMass, full-time. In this episode we hear just how Danielle grew her page from a side-hustle to a nationwide brand, pick her brain for tips for budding Depop entrepreneurs and learn how she used Love Island to capitalise on sales…

#9: Daniel Roche – The Smart Hustle of Outnumbered

In a very special episode of The Smart Hustle we chatted to actor and KCL student Daniel Roche, best known for playing Ben Brockman in the infamous BBC sitcom Outnumbered. We contacted Daniel after discovering that he was using Stint at University, demonstrating his commitment to a life of hustle. Listen out to hear him reminisce on how his mischievous nature helped him land the part in Outnumbered at the age of six, discusses his continued friendships with fellow siblings from the show and we ask whether his acting days are behind him…

#12: Sonny Drinkwater – The Smart Hustle of Healthy Snacks

We also spoke to a range of student entrepreneurs busy creating exciting start-up businesses, such as Sonny Drinkwater, a recent graduate from University of Bristol and co-founder of Snackcess. Sonny and two other friends came up with the idea during the first national lockdown, realising that there was a market for sending healthy snacks and care packages to employees working from home. Initially, the trio saw the project as a part-time project, but their success, including being featured by the BBC, convinced them to plan for the long-term. Listen out to hear Sonny explain how his own mental health experiences as a fresher inspired him to think differently about our snacking culture, whilst he also tells us why he thinks work from home culture represents an opportunity for entrepreneurs and founders to get more done.

More to come

We might have wrapped up The Smart Hustle, but we’re working on two new exciting series for our student audience. Keep your eyes peeled to our Instagram and student blog so you can be the first to listen once they drop…
